1992 Z28 Tranny Issues
1992 Z28 Tranny Issues
I have a 92 5.7TPI with a 700R4. The tranny works ok when its cold. As soon as it warms up I lose all gears. If I shut it off and wait a few minutes I can start it back up and have all my gears again for a few minutes and the cycle continues over and over again. I have a person on craigslist with a tranny from his 1992 camaro RS 305 LOE. Are the trannys the same or am I going to have an issue with gearing etc? I do not think I can fix mine. I can get this tranny for 100 bucks. He did a swap on his car to a LT1 with tranny so this is an extra for him. He said it has a shift kit in it as well. I am not sure what to do. Any ideas would be helpful at this point.
Thanks again!

That's a strange problem. I think I have to suspect the pump. If you can get a trans for $100 bucks my only question is: What are you waiting for? All kidding aside the trans is the same as yours. I would recommend upgrading to Corvette servos for use behind your 350, but otherwise it should be fine.

I purchased the new tranny. However I am still curious as to what the heck is going on with the original. I have found a few other posts on other web sites with tranny's doing the same thing. It loses gear completely, no reverse or nothing. Shut it off for just a few minutes, start it up and pow you have gears again. I just don't get it.

Re: 1992 Z28 Tranny Issues
Like I said I have to suspect the pump. I've had trannys that were outrigth broken, I'm talking about pieces of stuff falling out when I took them apart, and they still had 1st and reverse, or only 3rd gear, or something. The only thing I can see causing that would be a pump that isn't flowing much fluid or building any pressure when i gets hot. I presume you could check this by doing pressure tests on the trans, if you could get it hot and then test it, which would be difficult. This would probably confirm that when hot there is not enough pressure to lock any of the clutches or the band up, which makes the trans act like it is in neutral all the time.
