what do you recommend?

bought a 84 trans am the other day and im building it into a street strip car. with everything i have planned for the 350 it will probably have about 380 hp and 390 tq. I used desktop dyno and when my uncle copied a build off of it his engine was within 10 hp of what it said. well anyways i want a tranny that will hold up to this engine and be able to get the **** pounded out of it. this car will never be driven lightly. i was thinking of a 400 that i found for 50 bucks or maybe a 700 r4. does anyone know of a good high performance rebuild kit for these? i plan on 3.42 in the rear if this helps. also need help with a converter. ive never done this whole automatic thing.

I'm a die-hard 700R-4 guy, but in this case I'd hafta advise the TH400. You can get good kits from TCI and Hughes, and we can't suggest a converter until you give us specs on the cam. The 700R-4 would install easier, and feel way better in first gear, plus give better mileage, longer engine life and less noise at cruise, but getting one strong enough is a bigger investment up front than the TH400 swap. The TH400 will have hassles with mounting, the shifter, the driveshaft, and the torque arm, but it is a much stronger design with faw fewer inherent design flaws.
