The RPO code inside the center console.

An axle code stamped on the front of the passenger side axle tube.

Pull the rear cover and count the ring and pinion teeth. The ring gear should also have the number of teeth stamped on the side of it.

83 Z28 has a couple of options.

LG4 engine with a manual transmission has 3.23 gears with 3.73 as an option. With an automatic it has 3.23.

LU5 engine is only available with an automatic tranny. It has 2.93 gears and 3.23 were an option

L69 engine is only available with a manual tranny and has 3.73 gears.

From those choices I'd take a good guess and say you have 3.23 gears.
