What prevents stock 700R's from having full manual?

What prevents stock 700R's from having full manual?

I can manually shift mine just fine... why do people buy 78 dollar shift kits for this?

I ask because I am going to need mine rebuilt very soon... (burnt brown fluid.)

Automatic transmissions with manual valve bodies will not shift automatically like yours will. Most any automatic trans can be shifted manually but most stock ones will have an automatic upshift if rpms get too high. A shift kit that allows more manual control will eliminate this upshift but can be dangerous if driven by an inexperienced driver because they also allow downshifts at any speed.
