Re: 10 Bolt upgrade photos

Ron, what do you think about auburn carriers? I built my 10 bolt too as when I dropped my 383 in, I cracked the stock carrier almost all the way around allowing it to open up/spread apart when i gave it throttle. I could hear the ring and pinion slipping and grinding!! I was surprised that the case didnt break. Anyways I completely rebuilt it (sand blasted and all) Put Richmond ring and pinion, 373 gears. auburn carrier, used the same axles, new bearings and seals of course. black paint. so far its been good with my 500hp stroker. (flywheel) so yeah what do you or anyone for that matter think about auburn products? Thanks!!

thats a nice piece

Re: 10 Bolt upgrade photos

It seems that the gear drive L.S.D.s are popular and the Stock Auburn, not so much. I don't have first hand experience with them but the consensus is to replace them with a stronger gear drive or at least a rebuild able clutch pack type like the Eaton Posi. while you're upgrading the ring and pinion to a decent ratio.

Of course to each their own.

I picked the Eaton Posi. with clutch pack mainly because it was highly recommended buy Dan, the owner of the shop I had the work done at.
Its called "The Rear End Shop" and that's all they have been doing for the last 20 years. That's good enough for me and my "Have fun" DD.

Since you already have the Auburn and it's too late to change it, my advice is do not do any water burnouts, do not do any burnouts while holding the brake and be sure that the rear tires are the same size, with the same amount of wear and the air pressure is kept equal at all times.

Re: 10 Bolt upgrade photos

After wiping out 2 10 bolts (1 ring gear, 1 pinion race), I wised up and went to a 12 bolt - I was right at 300 hp and the gears were set up exactly correct- best shop in NJ did it both times. The good news was that all I did was buy a posi, gearset, and install kit - no reason to buy axles and support cover since they aren't the weak link - the tiny gears on the ring are (#2 is the pinion, #3 is the pinion race/bearing).

Think of it this way - you can spend $1,500 for 10 bolt parts and pray it will hold together, or you can buy something stronger (12 bolt, 9") and sell your old rear for $. By the time you are done, it may be a wash. Plus who wants to buy a blown up 10 bolt for anything other than scrap?

The picture you posted says 1,000 words - the ring gear teeth have at least 2x the material of the 10 bolt, the pinion looks to be even more. Combined with a bulletproof drop-in carrier assembly, it is one hell of a way to go! I went 12 bolt, but I might go 9" for the GTA if I build it.

Paul,
You'll be looking for this, then. Came in my inbox yesterday

Mark Williams Introduces 10" Gear 3rd Members for 9" Rears

Noted drive train components manufacturer Mark Williams Enterprises now offers race-ready 3rd members equipped with a beefy 10” pitch diameter ring gear (trimmed to 9.5”) that can be employed in the popular 9” Ford style rear end housing. This setup is ideally suited to ultra high horsepower applications like Pro Mod.
The husky ring gear and its companion pinion gear are housed in a rugged “thru-bolt” design aluminum carrier manufactured by M-W. Gears are now available in ratios from 3.70 to 4.71:1, with 5.43, 5.83, and 6.20 coming soon. A special pinion support is employed, as is a lightweight 40-spline steel spool. The 3rd member comes with 1350 or 1480 series yokes and completely set-up by M-W technicians and is ready to use.

No modifications are required to use the 10” pitch diameter center section in most modular aluminum 9” housing manufactured by M-W, and it is easily retrofitted to OEM steel housings and aftermarket units through a minor modification to the gasket surface area.

Additionally, the 10” pitch diameter gear units can be supported through the unique Thirdmember Rebuild Program offered by M-W. This allows racers to change ratios and receive complete blueprinted 3rd members for a nominal fee. For details call (toll-free) 866-508-6377 or visit www.markwilliams.com.
Part Number 57026
10" Pro Modified Thirdmember Assembly - Lrg pinion
*Price varies by ratio and pinion yoke

Re: 10 Bolt upgrade photos

The main issues is, when I was rebuilding my rearend back in 2010, I could get to #1400 for parts and labor. No way could I get to the $2500 needed for a 12-bolt that would be modified to fit my rear brakes and E-brake. Silly state inspection where i was at needed to have it working.

That said I've been driving on it for 5 years now with a 320hp motor and no issues.

Re: 10 Bolt upgrade photos

I guess the extra weight of the 9" would help the light rear on these Camaros hook. Still I will comment on getting the rotating mass/entire assembly off the line with a 200hp (if that)5.0.

Guys that have a lot of fun with a street car like that/like mine are fairly quick.
A built 10 Bolt is small but for a car that does not "absolutely" need a 9" the light weight is a "big" plus.
I have pushed my 10 Bolt as hard as I can at times and its still there.

I was under the impression that gear deflection killed the majority of 10 bolts and using a cover helps to eliminate that.

Re: 10 Bolt upgrade photos

My 86 is running about 370hp and 410tq through a stock rear end with 2.73 gears and no problems yet, it has about 10,000 extremely hard miles on it from the previous owner too and the car has 156,000 on it. I'm currently running kuhmo all seasons in the rear on stock 16 inch rims so it breaks loose pretty easily, I can spin the right rear until 70mph. I do plan on changing rear end in the next year or two because I want posi and better gears but until then I'll keep abusing my stock rear end.

The 2.73 gears don't stress the differential as much. Street tires that spin act as a fusible link. As others have said, the act of hooking up is where the stress and strain comes in. When the wheels spin a lot of the drivetrain damage is reduced since the differential isn't putting that power down to the road. Ha ha just going up in smoke and adding to the tire bill.
