Auto to Manual???

I have a 92 z28 with the stock auto tranny. Can i swap in a 5-speed and have the car shift as smoothly as a camaro with a 5-speed stock or like any other caar with a stock manual tranny??

The smoothness depends on the driver of course

Since all of the 5 speed parts were designed to work, there is no reason that it shouldn't shift as well as a car that had it installed from the factory. I'm not saying that it would be an easy conversion though. You would have to cut holes in your floor, install a new flywheel on the engine, and take the entire hydraulic clutch assembly out of a donor car. I'm sure some guys around here have done the swap before. Actually I seem to remember a tech article somewhere. Might want to check there and see if there is one already written.

I've done the swap. It is easily within the realm of something the average guy can do in his/her garage. I had a few surprises, such as the fact that my starter was too large to fit in the hole of the new flywheel cover. It is best if you have a HELM shop manual to understand the rewiring that is required. Cutting the hole for the clutch pedal is made easier because there is a cutout in the insulation to help in locating the hole. As was already mentioned, the manual transmission was designed to go into the car. I'm very pleased with the swap.
