How much tranny fluid should I put in.

Hi, I just completed an engine swap, but during that swap, a ton of fluid drained out the tail of the transmission. I would guess that its pretty much empty. I saw in my book that the capacity for the 700r4 is 4.7 quarts but it sure seems like more than that. How much tranny fluid should I put in there to start with? What will happen if I over fill it?
thanks,
Mike

Add enough to the trans to get a reading, then start the motor and read the stick, add one quart at a time till you start to get a reading then 1/2 a quart till it is full. Read both sides of the stick, the side that is the lowest is the true reading. Make sure you adjust the TV cable as per transfixleos suggestions.
