What trannys can I use?

So the tranny went out on my '89 v6 Firebird. So I was looking into local junk yards for another tranny out of a simliar year and model and the closest one is about 150 miles away.

I was just wondering, now this is coming from a person with little car experience, what other cars have transmissions I can use? For example, could I use the tranny out of a '94 Firebird? Or a tranny from a '93 Monte Carlo? What exactly do I need to look for?

Thanks for any help, and sorry if I sound like a complete idiot!

Well if they have a 93 Monte Carlo you should buy the whole car because they didn't make them from 89-94. lol

Newer Montes are FWD so that wont do u any good and older ones don't have torque arm mounts so you would have to buy a cross member. Not to mention im not sure if they were offered in a V6 with the same bolt pattern.

For a simple trans replacement I would just keep looking for a V6 F body one. Post up on WTB forum, I am sure someone closer than 150 miles will have one for sale.

Sorry about the Monte Carlo, I just made up a year on the car. I just read a post about someone putting a 3.4l v6 DOHC in a Firebird, so it just popped into my head.

Could I use a 4th gen tranny then? One of the '94s and older, because those came with 60* engines, right?
