I am offered a 700R4 Tranny for my 2.8.
It worked when it was removed from the vehicle. It has sat for awhile (about less that a year, let's say).
It's never been rebuilt and has had a good useage of life. The year of this tranny is I believe a 1986, from a V-6 Firebird.
NOW, the tranny is/has been sitting in a cold garage, flat, on its pan, with fluid in it. What could happen to it, to make it not operate correctly upon installing in my 1985 2-WD S-10 Blazer?
I will get another tranny torque convertor, use fresh fluids & filter. Maybe even a fresh seal or two (for the pump & the tail shaft seal).
What could go wrong with a tranny sitting out of action for a while that once worked proper?
Please educate me. It is to come from Wisconsin to Calfornia and I am getting it for basically FREE!

Please help both the seller and the buyer. Neither of us wants the deal to go sour, we are both helping each other on this deal.

Why was tranny removed from the running car? He swapped in a 5 speed stick shift set up in his Firebird.

If it has more than 50K on it, it needs a new Input Sprag, at very least.

NOW... Should I also replace the T.C. or may I just "have it drained (remove fluid for shipping)" and then reuse it?

I will not be pounding on this tranny. My S-10 Blazer engine is weak with age (211,500 miles), so I only need this tranny to function well.

How "deep" need I go, to install the beefier sprang?
If I have the tranny on the bench and I replace the filter, some seals, etc, how much further to reach the sprang?

I would change the front pump seal. I am kicking my self in the a_s for not changing it in my 84 4wd GMC Jimmy when I hade the engine out for a rebuild. After 10000 miles the son of a bi__h is puking out tranny fluid from the seal.

Guess what Im doing soon!!!!

That pump seal job was a given! I almost feel like upgrading the pump, but, why mess with what is in synch right now?
I only need it to move, not for performance, right now!
The engine is weak, so it'll be a perfect match for the tranny.
