Good performance 700R4 for cheap??
Good performance 700R4 for cheap??
The Minirammed 409 in just put in my brother's 87 GTA is putting out engough ponies that the original 700R4 is going away VERY QUICKLY. WOT upshifts are a textbook case of tranny slippage and take a LLLOOONNNNGGG time. The car is just STUPID to drive around in- the lousy tranny is just killing the fun!
Would it be cheaper (and/or better) to rebuild what he's already got or buy a complete performance build tranny? We're not running slicks or doing a lot of dragstip work, but it's gotta handle the nearly 500 ft/lbs of torque the motor's putting out.
We want to also UPGRADE to have OD available at WOT (a la Corvette) and raise the shift points to 6000 in every gear to take advantage of the higher revving nature of the new motor.
Specific examples of where/who/what/how much for either course of action much appreciated.

There is no way to build a 700 to handle 500 ft lbs for cheap, you're looking at about $1400 at least unless you know trans work very well and can build your own. If so you can build one for about half that.

has some good stuff, I would go for a vigilante converter by precision industries.

$1400 doesn't sound too bad to me. I just don't want to drop 2Gs+ on one.
Leo- drop me an email. I might take you up on your offer. I'm more than happy to help a pro make some "extracurricular income" on a side project and save some dough myself at the same time. Being a former, um.... well..... FORD mechanic myself I know that game.
