winter car time and ive got tranny problems

Well I jus got and early 90's(havnt checked yet) Thunderchicken for $100. The car only has 37,000 miles on it. The only problem with the car is that it doesnt shift into reverse. I really havnt had a chance yet to get into it yet, so what should I look for in order to fix this problem? Sorry, I know its a ford but I needed a cheap winter car. That way I dont care what happens to it!

Sounds like probably a rebuild, because whatever is wrong will require at least a partial teardown anyway. I'll have to look at the apply chart for the AOD/AODE that you almost definately have, but I think the reverse band, and it's servo, and one other clutch provide reverse, therefore one of them must be bad, unless it's a valve in the valvebody sticking.

That transmission isn't bad to rebuild, I've done a few, and the only problem I had on one of them was my own fault (Put a thrust washer in backwards! Not something you want to do, trust me!) The other (first one) was fine!

Then again, for a winter beater, a used one sounds like the way to go (unless they're ridiculously expensive, I haven't priced one!)

See if it upshifts through the gears. Like the 700, this has a Sun Shell that has been known to break, just not nearly as often. Just for the recoed, the Sun Gear is welded to the Shell. When these break it almost looks like it is made that way and have seen people miss it if they didn't know better.

Next is to see if it has engine braking in Manual Low. If it does (probably will) then the problem is in the Reverse Input Drum. You will probably find the Belleville Spring in peices.

A couple guys said somthing about just changing the filter and looking into the cables. The shifter gooes into reverse but nothing happens. Are they also somthing to try or not? If those two dont work I'll just try having someone look at it.
