Changing 5 speed oil

I have a 1987 IROC-Z with a 305, 5 speed, and 70,000 miles. I've owned this car since 1990, and am very "****" when it comes to maintenence. I would like to change the gear oil in the 5 speed. My Chiltons manual, and factory service manual say that it is not necessary to ever change this. I feel that after 70,000 miles, and 22 years of shifting, the fluid should be changed. I'm an avid synthetic oil user, and would like to change it to the synthetic fluid (5W-30 manual transmission oil, or GM 1052931). What are your thoughts of changing it, and switching over to synthetic? I looked around a little and couldn't find any synthetic fluid in my local auto parts stores. Thanks in advance!

Check the T-5 FAQ at the top of the page for more info. Change the fluid. I use Mobil 1 synthetic.
