tranny going out or what, PLEASE HELP!!!

Hey, I've got an 87 firebird with a 2.8 litre and all that. I think my tranny is going out but not sure. When I take off in overdrive, instead of just regualar drive, the car will barely move when you hit the gas. But when you have it in regular drive, it takes off just fine but there is a real quiet high pitched sound coming from the tranny (I think). Anyway. my car did this a long time ago also, I changed the spark plugs and wires and it quit! HAs anyone ever had this problem, and what should I do???

Any help will be very appreciated!

Thanks,

JOrdan

It sounds like the classic sign of a bad input sprag. You see in O/D when the Forwards come on they actually apply the Input sprag which goes on to drive the rest of the geartrain. If it slips, no movement. When ou put it in D, the Overrun Clutches come one but they are meant for engine breaking, not holding on acceleration and will toast quick enough. Time for an O/H.

Well, I put a little transX in it for the heck of it and drove to coffeyville (a town about 15 miles away from here) and drove in overdrive down there. When I got back, I drove around town with it in overdrive still and it didn't slip anymore. Did the transX fix it or what?

Thanks for the help,

Jordan

I would say either buy a call phone or don't drive too far from home.
