Filter touching the bottom of the pan?

I finished the transgo install and was bolting up the pan and noticed that the filter wasn’t seated right, it was hanging up a little, finally had to whack it with a piece of 2x4 to get it to go up inside all the way (put a little dent in the steel bottom, but not enough to hurt anything, but when I bolted the pan to the bottom of the case, I noticed that the filter hits the bottom. I even measured everything and it doesn’t appear that there is even enough room depth wise for it not to. I always though that it sat like ¼” above the bottom or so, is this right? I’ve never noticed this before in my ’83 or my truck…

Then I figured out why whoever did the fluid change last didn’t tighten the rear pan bolts before me… the bolt holes were stripped, that was fun to fix…

This thing will never make it out of my garage…

Did you pull the old filter gasket out?

Yes, I did, i confirmed that it's the right filter by checking it against the old one, which I had the old seal on it so I know that's not in the bore anymore (don't know why I bother doing stuff like that, I've seen that filter a dozen times before).

For that matter the valve body has a flat spring mounted under one of the bolts that appears to have no purpose except to push down on the filter (I don't remember my other 700r4's having that at all) and that is touching with the filter installed, there is probably less then a 1/2" gap between the bottom of the valve body and the top of the filter.
