12 Bolt Problems

I have my 12 bolt installed and I noticed leaking from the axel bearing (in the inner seal) on the right side.
I took it to a rearend place where they installed everything including the seal. I complained to the rearend place. I thought they didn't do the job right but they know what they're doing. But it still leaks. Its getting me mad. Is there anyone with this problem? Fu**, what should I do? Oh, and my gear setup is 3:73 with non-clips.

A leaking axle seal usually means the bearing is going. If the axle shows no sign of wear, change the bearing. If the seal still leaks then there's something wrong with the housing ends. Possibly a crack around the seal surface.

Re: 12 Bolt Problems

I'm looking for the part number for this seal. I need to get 2 of them ASAP. I have a 12-bolt strange Engineering rear with 373's and c-clip eliminators as well. I can't find this seal at any parts store because I don't know what they model their 12-bolts after. I've had numerous parts stores check to come up with nothing. I could go through strange, and I might have to, but they are closed and they told me that these seals are pretty common and easy to find. They just didn't give me this part number as it wasn't the one I was asking for at the time. Anyone got anything??

Re: 12 Bolt Problems

Need more information. Which axle bearings do you have? Are they the 9 inch Ford axle bearings or are they the standard c clip eliminator bearings? If you have the 9 inch Ford sealed ball bearings then get axle seals for a Ford truck with the 9 inch (CR-15141). If you have the 9 inch Ford tapered roller bearings then use a seal for a Lincoln with the 9 inch. This seal can not be replaced without replacing the bearing too. If you have the tapered roller bearings then DO NOT use the seal for the ball bearings. If you have the standard c clip eliminators with the aluminum housing then you need to get them from Strange. If you can get a part number off of the seal that will help you a lot. Sometimes the number is on the metal part and sometimes it is molded into the rubber lip.

Re: 12 Bolt Problems

They are roller bearings, as opposed to the ball bearing ones. What would the 9" bearings look like? I know that they have a seal with the roller bearings over it, and a "wedding band" on top to hold it all on, then inside the housing there is another seal that the wedding band presses into. I hope that's enough info.
We have a part number on the seal but it doesn't reference to anything out here.

Re: 12 Bolt Problems

Is there an aluminum housing around the bearing or is there just a steel retaining plate? There shouldn't be a seal in the housing end if you have the Ford tapered roller bearing. This bearing requires oil from the rear end to lubricate it. The sealed ball bearing doesn't need oil from the reaer end, so the seal is placed inside the housing end and runs on the axle shaft. If you have an aluminum housng around the bearing then you need to contact Strange for the parts.
