Stock Tranny from 305?
Hey,
can anyone tell me what the transmission would be in a 1990 RS with a 305 V8? Was there any variation in transmissions in that year or engine or were the trannys that were put in them all the same?

It will be a TH700R4. I know they put 200R4s in some of them back in the earlier 80s, but I'm pretty sure yours is a 700. Assuming it is an auto car to begin with. The 700R4 is a good sturdy 4 speed tranny. They are probably the perfect tranny for a street/strip musclecar. It's more than strong enough for your 305, even if it's hopped up, and it will give you fairly good highway cruising gas mileage.
You should go to your local part house and get a HAYNES or CHILTONS book for your car. It has all the speck you'll ever need for that car.

Thanks for the info, its good to know what I have in it. I figured thats what it was. The reason I was asking is because I bought the car this past summer from a guy who had replaced the TBI 305 with a Carbureted 350 out of a 1985 chevy pick-up. I"m planning on getting the engine rebuilt next month but was told that the tranny might not be able to handle the power from the rebuilt 350. I don't plan on doing a while bunch of mods with the rebuild but I want to get her bored .30 over and possible go up one notch with the cam. I also plan on rebuilding the 650 cfm edelbrock that is already on there and also putting in a new, possibly a slight high-rise, intake manifold. Does anyone think that I would have a problem with the 700R4 with the rebuilt engine?

...like revving it up in neutral and throwing it into gear?
that sure would fudge up a good tranny
go stick shift, lol

Re: Stock Tranny from 305?
I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be making any stupid mistakes like that. I'm not looking for a street racer here. I just want to make sure that for daily driving and even opening her up once in a while (and I don't mean once a day) will not tear up my tranny.
On another note. The 700R4 that is in there is giving me a few problems as it is. After she warms up and i put her in D it throws it into gear so hard the rear tires jolt and then when i'm driving her when she's cold in D it takes a LONG time for her to shift. Not sure what the RPMs are because my tachometer isn't working right. any suggestions?

Check to make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly (???)
FWIW, there are many 350 powered f bodies that came from the factory with the 700 R4, so I wouldn't worry about the trans holding up. Well, if the trans is in good condition to start with, that is.

700r4, in 82 and 83 i believe they used 200r or 200c, i forget it but i know it didnt have overdrive. a good 700r4 should handle an assload of horsepower if taken care of properly, no neutral drops, and no long burnouts

beaner good englix. you drive a proper camero. where I live you can't mod a engine like that-smog. overdrives yes. a fst car you have not yet-the trans is overkill-go BIGGER/smog must not apply to you in mexico.?

Re: Stock Tranny from 305?
the 700r4's are different through the years. if you have the original 90 700r4 that is a good one, if you got the 85 700r4 with the motor...well not as good. but you are using the car as a driver and either will work for that. spinning the tires is not as bad as the car hooking hard and lifting the frontend...that will test a tranny.

Re: Stock Tranny from 305?
Nope, they never put 2004R's in thirdgens, except in the '89 Turbo Trans Am. The 82-83 3-speed automatic was the TH200C and the later 4-speed overdrive automatic is the 700R4.
