700R4 Problems (off topic)

i have a 89 chevy k1500 4x4 it has a 700r4 transmission i bought a junkyard 700r4 and put it into the truck everything is hooked up. i had problems with the shifter moving so i disconnected it and shifted by hand under the truck and it wont move it starts fine has plenty of fluid. when putting it into 4x4 when its running it will grind so i know power is going through the transmission but it wont move the truck at all. anyone have any idea on what is the possible problem?

Did you try it in all the gears including reverse?

yes i tried it i think theres a problem with the torque converter not staying all the way back. when the bolts are tightened it pulls out forward a over a 1/4" so i am going to try and put a spacer in with longer bolts to push it back and see if that makes the gears engage. if it does then i will have to swap out the flywheel. and if nothing still happens i have a toast new junkyard transmission

Re: 700R4 Problems (off topic)

if you're a first timer did you "stack the pump" which means that the torque converter wasn't installed all the way during the install and caused a bind up during bolting the bellhousing to the engine breaking the pump gears (shattering them) because they are made of a powdered type of metal? If so you probably forced the trans to the engine and heard a "pop"-which was the pump gears breaking. This will cause no movement because the pump won't pump! A new pump will probably be necessary if this is the case because it chews up the pump housing internally.
You mentioned a grind noise from the transfercase so probably the transmission output shaft is turning but the transfercase isn't fully engaged. I've had this happen before. try to force the transfercase in while you shut the engine off. it should grind into gear-crude but effective.
If all else fails pull the transfercase and run the trans. You can see if the output shaft of the trans turns or not.
Good luck and post what is the actual problem-I'm curious if the grind it in method works.
