speedometer problems need some advice
the speedometer is acting up on my 1988 tpi 350 iroc-z. while i am driving the speedometer jumps around. example: i driving 80 mph the speedometer jumps form 80 up to 90 back to 80 and to 70. i replaced the speedometer cable no sharp bends or binds. could it be the plastic speedometer gear in the trans (i dont think the speedometer is electric but i could be wrong) or the unit in the dash or what? any advice is greatly appreciated.hope this isn't a problem, i posted this in tech/general also.
thanks

I recently had some problems with my speedo. Except in my case the speedo didn't work at all. I found that it was the vehicle speed sensor. My car is an 87 and the entire speedometer system is electric. The sensor itself has a gear on it, my gear was worn completely down, hense the speedo wasn't working. Your gear may be slightly worn on a side causing it to jump around, but I could be wrong, there are lots of electrical components that might be coming loose also. The speed sensor is relatively easy to check, I hope this helps.

John,
Camaro speedos are mechanical through 89. Should you discover you require a new speedo head, please see my ad in the classified.
