I just lost Drive and Overdrive on my car yesterday. Without any warning. It was fine, I was on the highway for about 30 min, and stopped for a bout 10 min at my GF's house. When I go to leave, my car didn't have D or OD. It just revs at about 4k RPM, and does about 30 MPH.

Second gear works perfectly. Which I thought is odd because wouldn't that mean that the band that is on 2nd and 4th gear still works?

There is a wierd ticking noise that seems to be coming from my console. Not sure what it is, I thought it just may be the tranny.

Can someone help me?

In Man 1 and 2, line pressure is greatly increased so that if, let's say your Forwards were slipping badly at normal pressure that they might grab with the added pressure.

Let me try and clraify this though. If you go to take off in O/D or D, it still slips to @4K, right? Or does it take off OK but it doesn't shift and gets to 4K?

The reason I ask is different 'working' combinations would mean different things.

 

Ok, when I take off in D or OD. It starts fine, in first, and then goes to second gear. When it tries to switch to third gear. The RPM jumps to 4k or so, and my max speed is 30MPH.

OH, now I get it. Your 3/4 Clutch pack is toast. Common problem.
