Another can't shift thread

My 92 Firebird won't hardly shift into 1st gear a lot of times. It's the original T-5 /305. The rest of the gears seem to shift ok. But sometimes 1st shifts ok, what gives? Thanks in advance.

Re: Another can't shift thread

So you can't downshift into first sometimes? I need more specific information before I can diagnose this. Is it speed dependant? In other words is it tough to downshift at say 25mph, but easy at 15mph. What happens when it doesn't want to shift? Noises? Stick won't move?

Re: Another can't shift thread

Thanks for the reply. I don't really know on the downshifting, It's stiff as hell trying to get into 1st at normal idle. No problem while shifting into all the other gears. No noises while trying 1st, other than the sycronizers grinding while trying to get into reverse, and it's done that since i bought the car new.

Re: Another can't shift thread

Had an '84 berlinetta that did something similar to this. Had gears 1-4, but they were very difficult to shift in to, and 5 was impossible. My problem ended up being a bent locking pin on the shifter that had worked its way out. It was an easy fix.

Re: Another can't shift thread

What if you try and put it into another forward gear? Does it do the same thing in 3rd for example?

To keep from grinding reverse put the trans in 2nd and then go into reverse. No more grind.
