Axels and Speedo Gears

How do I find out what spline my axels are? And where do I locate the gears for the speedo, and change them? Thank you very much for the help!

Sorry, totally forgot, 89 RS 305 700r. Also, do I have to replace the speedo gears for a rear gear swap, or can I change the position of the speedo needle? Thanks!

You most likely (98.5%) sure you have 26 spline axles. For 89 there may be some 28 spline axles introduced, but I havn't seen one with them so far.

As for changing the speedo gears, you need to locate the 'driven' gear at the tail of the tranny on the drivers side. You may also need to change the drive gear which involes taking the tailshaft housing off the tranny (4 bolts) and it's pretty straightforward. I would be able to tell you the part numbers of the drive and driven gear if you tell me the ratio you're putting in, and your tire size. (No you can't move the needle)

You may have the right drive gear for the combo your going for, you could check in the through the hole after removing the driven gear with a flashlight (the red gear is 17 tooth)

Yep, there are lots of 10-bolt posi units in Camaros and Firebirds. You'll need to find one from an 82-89 f-body to match up with the 26 spline axles you have now. Usually you'll find them in 85-89 Z28/Trans Am cars with 305 TPI's and drum brakes.
