New Rearend?
New Rearend?
Ok - here goes. Since I'm "re-vamping" my car a lot - with lots of new stuff, I was considering upgrading the rearend of my car - I'm kind of afraid that with all the new stuff (exhaust, headers, polyurethane bushings, mounts, and suspension), that I'm gonna blow my 13 year old 2.73 rear end. As most of you can relate, I'm not easy on my car at red lights
Sooo - my question was this - has anyone done a rear end upgrade on their 305 TBI with a 2.73 rear end? If so - what did you upgrade to and how much did it cost?

I just finished putting in a new rear end in my girlfriend's 88' Camaro actually. It has a 305 V8 engine as well.
The rear end was going bad, so it was neccessary to replace it. We got a new rear end for a good $150 dollars (good deal!) and installed it ourselves. We got lucky because despite all the rust (cleaned it up) the calipers & brake pads were like new; only had to replace the emergency brake cable($22) and get the rotors turned ($20).
The rear end was a major upgrade, coming with disc brakes, positronic traction, a level 2 sway bar and better gears.
I can already tell a big difference; car definitely jumps off the line!
Go for it! It's a good solid upgrade and doesn't cost that much in the long run.

Btw, I don't know what the gear ratios are for the rear end: friend should know.
But there's no doubt the gears are better for acceleration (that's what we were going for!).

I drive the an 88 IROC with the exact same engine and rear-end. I am wondering the same thing as Camaro88Lover. I was considering changing only the gears in my tranny. I think I wanna change to 4.10 or at least 3.73's. Would it run better or be cheaper just to replace the axle and everything? Thanks for bringing it up 88Lover.
