Help me get a grip on my rearend.....sort of...
OK, we've got 9 bolts, 10 bolts, 9 inchers, 7.25s, 7.5s, 1,2,and 3 series carriers. I know what rear I have, but I'm looking for a better understanding of all this. I have and 88 with a 9 bolt 2.77 posi now, I have an 89 2.77 posi waiting, but now I'm thinking of going to a 10 bolt because of the larger range of options. Anyone know of a good source to learn what all this means(website, book, etc.) so I can figure out which way I want to go? Thanks to all.

An excellent source is right here, what exactly do you want to know? A 10 bolt, 3.73 posi/locker, disk(assuming that's what you have now) rear end would really wake your car up.

I checked those pages out and they are great, but I guess what I need to understand is what is meant by 1,2,and 3 series carriers and what determines the size of ring gears (7.625, 7.5, etc.) I have no idea. Is it the type of rearend or the gearing? What carriers and ring gears go with what rears? I am contemplating switching my 9 bolt for a 10 bolt disc rear and installing a SLP posi and 3.42 gears. Thanks again guys.

Axle/Gears: QP 35 spline Ford 9" 3.50 gears
The 7.5/7.6" number is the diameter of the ring gear itself (Ford 9" has a 9" ring gear diameter, GM 10 bolt 8.5" has a 8.5" diameter ring gear and so on) Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the carrier series I believe denotes the gear ratio you can use on that specific carrier. Example, Richmond sells 3.42 gears for a 3.08 and numerically lower carriers(2 series) and for 3.23 and numerically higher carriers(3 series) which are different part numbers. Hope that helps.

I get the ring gear issue but I'm still lost with the carriers. What determines them...year model? Manufacturer? How do you tell? Can a 2 or 3 series go in the same rear? Example, I guess I need to hear something like "This '92 Z28 has a ____-inch (ring gear) 10 bolt with a ___-series carrier, and this is why I know that.
Sorry if this seems monotonous but I don't get this yet. Thanks for the patience.

the difference between a 2 ans a 3 series carrier is the thickness of the flange the ring gear bolts up to. a 2 series carrier is not as thick on the flange as a 3 series carrier. the ring gears on 2.00 ratio are thinner than the ring gears for 3.00 ratios. you can put a 3.08 or higher numerical gear on a 2 series carrier with the aid of a ring gear spacer. however, most times you cannot do the reverse. because you would not be able to shim the posi over far enough. now, they do make aftermarket gears for the carriers. that's why they say 3.42 (2 series carrier) and 3.42 (3 series carrier) so you won't need to buy the spacer. hope that helps.

actually the split between 2 and 3 series is 3.08 and numerically lower is 2 series and 3.23 and numerically higher is 3 series

THAT'S what I needed, thanks guys. Now I've got it.
does anyone know of any good places to get gears for the bw 9 bolt. I know that they are more expensive, but that is what I have and from what I understand they are stronger than a ten bolt. I have 2.77 limited slip in it now. I have a 3.08 gear also that came in my origional rear. It is also a bw nine bolt but it is open carier and had drum brakes. If it is too much trouble or costs way to much I may just use the 3.08s but I would like to run something more like 3.45s. Thanks for your help.

Do a search. There's a guy here (88 427 Chevy?) who sells them, he can hook you up.
FYI, topic wise, I'm gonna stay with my 9 bolt and just switch gears when I get around to it. It's got the PBRs so I'm happy..
