I think third gear is slipping... anything I can do?
Hey guys, this is my first time posting on this part of thirdgen - my RS is in great shape, only 80,000 on it when I got it 2 years ago, only 98,000 on it now. It was garaged, a one owner. And he was a mechanic, so the transmission was always taken care of and works really well in all respects but one. When I'm heading down the road at around 70 mph and I floor it, the rpm goes to redline with almost no difference in speed. I might go from 70 to 75. Is this third gear slipping? I don't know a lot about automatics, I've always tried to steer clear of them. My neighbor told me his chevy had the same problem and all I needed to do was change the trans filter and it would stop shifting. I've got the filter but I live in an apartment and we aren't allowed to be tearing our cars apart in the parking lot, so I'll have to have a shop do it. Do you guys really think it will help the slipping? How much does it usually run to have a filter changed?
P.S. - Financially a rebuild is out of the question for me, my business is sucking in this economy, so tell me anything but that please! I'll pour lucas into it all day long if I have to! lol
