Overdrive slip?
When I have the car in overdrive and I'm crusing, the rpms jump between the rpm levels of overdrive and drive. If I drop it down into drive, it'll go back to the higher rpm level it was jumping back and forth between, but it wouldn't do what overdrive was doing. I'm thinking that it's shifting back and forth between overdrive and drive, I'm not sure though.
It could be one (or more) of three things. It could be cycling up and down. It could be slipping in 4th, reverting back to 3rd. Or it could be Lock Up cycling for some reason. Try this: The next time it does that, step on the brake just enough to light the lights but no more, while maintaining the same throttle position. IF the problem goes away, it is L/U cycling. Start by checking your coolant level if this is the case.
