Trying to diagnose some whining

Hi guys, I just bought a 92 Camaro RS. It has a 5.0 and I'm noticing some strange high pitched whining coming from the rear of the car right when I'm getting to about 35mph or so.

The whining very quickly tapers off when I let off of the gas but when I'm going down the interstate it tends to become very loud. I drove it to work today while it was raining and had the windows up for the first time and also noticed a burning smell.

I've been told this could be an axle bearing or pinion bearing going out? It also sounds like its coming from the right side of the car?

I'm just trying to identify and get this fixed before my rear end is toast I'm not the greatest with cars but not completely novice. A coworker recommended that I check the differential fluid first and make sure it's just not under lubricated or something.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you much!

mine was doing the same after i replace the spider gear in my rear end. the guy that did the work tightend the pinion bolt too tight which caused it to whine. he loosened it a bit and its been fine ever since. it could do some serious damge to the rear end if you dont take care of it.
