Drag racing 1/4, the lower the gear the better, but it has to be matched to your powerband, if you can't rev past 5k rpms, you won't want 3:73s or numerically higher.

I would go with 3:42s for the most of them, but if you want economical on most stock cars you'll want a lower numerical gear like 2:73s.

But in the end you'll want gearing to match the setup of your car and your driving distances. If you do a lot of highway driving, go w/ 3:42s, if acceleration is what you want go with 3:73s as long as your car won't run out of rpms at the end of the track.

It depends on the car's setup and engine specs. For example, on a high performance engine 2.73's and overdrive, mileage will be worse than 3.42's.

350 with stealth intake, holley carb, 470 lift cam. 700r4 with .5 boost valve, vette servo, tci lock-up kit, B&M megashifter. Richmond 3.73 gears, powertrax locker, timkin bearings, synthetic lube. Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, currant red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...
