I just noticed that in an earlier post you referred to the '84 700 form a van as "undesirable" I'm just curious as to why because that's what is in my car right now.
I'd hate to think I put in a lemon.

While I have built 700's as early as '82's that went on to live for a LOOONG time this was in regular applications, not a performance motor and maybe an occasional too heavy foot! The 700 has recieved various running changes over the years with the generally accepted best starting point as far as years to be @'87 and above. No matter what though the tranny still has design flaws that eventualy kill the unit and even quicker in this type application. To address these you first and foremost, IMO, need to get a TransGo Reprogramming Kit in there. This is not the only thing but perhaps the most important. If your tranny is not too far gone you could try it in yours but if you doubt it will last then get a latter one and install it in that.

As far as having all the goodies probably something like an IROC would be good. Even though it still needs the TransGo stuff and other upgrades since no matter what version you are talking about they ALL have the same design flaws/weaknesses.

When it comes to 700's, I can start with any core and eventually get the shift timing and such that I want but it is easier to start with a later core since it will have the larger shaft, etc., already. Will they be good? That is another question as all trannies can wear parts out.
