i have an 89 firebird. it has the 305 with what i believe to be the 700r4 tranny. my problem is that it wont engage in 1st gear while in drive. while in drive the car will not move no matter what the rpm's are at. i then manually put it in 1st and she moves, the i hit second and a little faster, then D and shes up to speed now. drive will not work at a complete stop but it will work perfectly at highway speeds, i have to start in 1st and work my way up. please someone help me out here, im clueless on what it may be and ive searched the forums for hours. thanks alot

If its a 3speed then its not a 700r4(4 speed/overdrive)..But it sounds like your governor may be getting stuck.

 

There is more line (oil) pressure in manual "1" than in the "D: position. Check the fluid level closely and the condition of the fluid. DO NOT rev the motor trying to get it in a gear, YOU will finish the transmision off in short order. Let me know what you "see" here. Dana

 

it only now works in 1st gear. it was working fine from first to drive then it wouldnt catch till 2500 rpms and then i got no response at any rpms.

i can get my hands on another 700r4 tranny, would one fit from a 1993 camaro v8 ??
