Speedometer Gears
Speedometer Gears
Is it possible for the speedo gears to be stripped? When the tranny shop put my trans in (should have done it myself)they put the speedometer cable too close to my headers so it got burned through, and was melted solid. So I believe since the gears were turning and my cable was not, the gears got stripped. Is this possible? I got the cable replaced and when i spin the end of the cable by hand, the speedometer works, but when i put it into the tranny, it does not. Is this an easy fix or no?

The gears could be stripped, or the clip holding the drive gear in position could have failed, letting it slip.

Well it sounds like you have virtually answered your own question to me. if you know the cable and the gauge are fine, the problem has to be in the speedo adapter or the speedo gears themselves. I have seen speedo gears strip, but it usually happens only when the installer doesn't pay attention to what they are doing and they don't get the teeth engaged right or the adapter in at the right angle. Those gears are pretty tough though, and will usually just right themselves if something isn't right with their alignment.
You are probably just going to have to get in there and pull the speedo adapter out and check the gears and the adapter itself out for any possible problems. If the gears are good (that means you need to ensure that the drive gear on the output shaft of the transmission is securely mounted to the shaft itself with the little metal clip), then the problem must be in the adapter...
Hope that helps....
