Drivetrain help with LT-1 swap

Swapping an LT-1 and T56 for the LO3 and 700R4 in my 1990 RS. What should I be looking for as far as driveshaft...in other words, can i re-use my current driveshaft, or will I need a 4th gen driveshaft, or a totally different one? Any help is appreciated.

not sire if the lt1 sits back farther in the engine bay or not but i would guess that you would be able to use your stock one.

Well, since the 4th gens and the 3rd gens use the same driveshaft (dimension wise) you won't need a new driveshaft - as long as you get the engine in the car in the right position..... I am not really sure about this, but I know a guy that has an LT1 in an 86 IROC and I think he had to do some work on the motor mounts to get it in there correctly.... I'll ask him about that tomorrow at our MN F-body Club meeting..

Sorry bout the wait on this...

I didn't really get a chance to talk with him much about his LT1s in his thirdgens (I guess he now has two thirdgen Camaros with LT1s....), but he said that he bolted his LT1s in with the stock location motor mounts and all. He did say that installing ones with AC will cause some clearance problems with the frame, but still get bolted into the same mounts as the stock thirdgen engine.... He also bought a Spohn transmission crossmember/torque arm assembly for one of the cars that also has a T56 in it. The other LT1 powered Camaro has a TH700R4... He used the stock driveshafts in both cars (I think he got a 1LE aluminum one for one of them, but it is still stock thirdgen/fourthgen dimensions.)

So I guess the answer is that yes, an LT1 can be bolted in using the stock engine mounts (and a modified crossmember if it is a T56 trans) and the stock driveshaft can be retained (or a stock dimension replacement one like a 1LE one...).

Hope that helps some....

If you want to contact him, he posts on the Minnesota F-body Club's (link in my sig) message boards under the name 'LT1Powered85Z'
