9 bolt bw questions

I was wondering what all is involved in changing gears and carrier in a 9 bolt. I dont think I would trust myself doing it without being taught how to do it properly, but I would like to know what is done. I plan on putting new gears in mine when I can afford it. I have read that the axles unbolt at the end kind of similarly to a 9 inch, but what else is done. Also, Miles if you read this, what all is included in your install kit.

Thanks

Ben

you need things like a back lash gauge, marking compound and a few other things, a gear swap is one of those few things left for a pro to do.

I realize that it would be best left for a pro, but I wondered what they will be doing. I was wondering more about the process to removing and installing the gears. I was also wondering what is different between the b/w and the 10 bolt that causes the haynes manual to give some instructions on working on a 10 bolt but says that special tools are required for a b/w. There appears to be a need for special tools for both. Is there something specificly different about the b/w for them to say this or what. Thanks for your help.

Included in the kit is all the parts you need for a gear and/or carrier swap. It does not include the tools (special or not) like a pinion depth gauge, inlb torque wrench and dial indicator with mag base. It is not difficult to do, but like anything else, you need the correct tools and knowledge. But, for ~100-150 you can have a shop install the parts. It will cost 3x's that to buy the correct tools.

Go to the library and get a Chiltons or GM factory manual for info on the 9 bolt.

Currently installing 3.73's into my 9 bolt (YES, it is a 9 bolt & YES they are 3.73's, not 3.70. I currently have 4.10 gear sets and new series 3 posi carriers for sale for 9 bolts )

Thanks for your help guys. I have just learned so much the rest of the car in the last couple of years and it seemed like I hadnt really learned that much about that. I plan on having a shop do the gears, but I just wanted to know what I was paying them for and be able to make sure that they didnt bs me. I think I actually have the chiltons for it here if I can find it.

Well, I read the Chiltons. It showed how to remove the axles. Does the rest come loose when you do that. It didnt tell how to remove the rest.

Try the library for their reference books. It has very good illustrations. I will try and scan some in too, but it won't be until atleast next week.

Thanks for your help, but I did go to the library.(The chiltons that I had was not the right one) I didnt find anything better than the chiltons but that is almost all I could find that even mentioned the borg warner other than to say (other than borg warner). That would be great if you could scan those in, and thanks for being so patient with me.

You need to buy a Helms repair manual for your car. Either from ths link, or eBay.

Well do they make them for multiple years because my car is an 85, the rear end is an 86, the tuned port is off of an 87 and will be converted to speed density which will be covered in the 91-92 manuals. Those books ar expensive and if I have to buy one for each year that will cost me quite a bit of money.

The 86 rear and 85 vin are the same. Then you'd need to get the 91 or 92 for the SD. There may be minor wiring and sensor issues to deal with for the 87. But if it is just an engine no biggie. Too bad there isn't a library of them to check out. 8^) Pick up what you can cheaply on eBay.
