almost all automatics are wider than manuals due to the way they work in regards to design and gear changing
a powerglide is thinner than most autos though...so i'm not positively sure
i know a few 4th gens who were running powerglides but not a 3rd gen.
They are un-useful unless you have a lightweight vehicle turning high rpms or a 1000+hp car that needs the traction on a stock suspension

I was going to go with a glide but decided on a TH400 instead. I didn't want to have to buy another shifter. The body of the glide is very small. If you really need a performance one, buy an Ultrabell case. A stock glide case will break if too much HP is put through it.
Since it only has low gear, direct and reverse, there isn't much inside it. Standard transmissions will always be smaller. Simple gears don't need as much room as clutchs, drums and hydraulics.
