700 R4 Rebuild Problems

I recently had a Rebuilder sell me a 89 700r4
for my 84 C4 Cross Fire vette. The tranny that was in it was the original early 27 spline 700.

I installed it with a new lock-up stall converter and a new TV cable and fresh Dex III fluid.

The problem is the D2 to D3 shift and the D3 to D4 shift.

The D2 to D3 shift on light throttle fluctuates between the two gears until more
throttle pressure is applied. under hard
acceleration the shift is very sloppy.

The D3 to D4 shift is the same as the previous.

I took the car to him monday and he readjusted the TV cable more towards the firewall. The D2 to D3 shift improved but now when full throttle is applied it pulls the adjustment out. He told me to drill a hole in the adjustment mech. and put a screw in. This fix will eliminate full throttle for the car.

The D3 to D4 problem he told me is the electrical wiring in the tranny. He gave me a early hareness to put in.

I posted this in the vette forum, but haven't recieved a intelligent technical reply. One guy told me the rebuilder was "Right on". I need more of an eexplanation so I can go back armed with info for the rebuilder.

Thanks in advance. Shaun

was the transmission build for your car or did he have it laying around? the first thing i would check is to see if it has the right servo installed.

I really don't like the idea of the screw in the cable. This is not an acceptable fix! Transfixleo has posted many times the proper precedure for adjusting the TV cable on a 700R4. Do a search and I'm sure it will turn up!

Beyond that, I'm not really sure where to point you, so I'll keep shut up!

The tranny he gave me was a vette tranny, It has no transmission mount pad and longer rear housing bolt castings. Also There is a "V" cast on the bellhousing end of the case. I haven't read the trans code on the right side of the case, but will tomorrow when I get it up on the lift.

I saw this tranny before he rebuilt it and it was complete. I dont know of the condition of the internals though.

Thanks again for the info.

There is ONE setting for your TV and that is it! To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the D button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

If after that is done you don't like how it operates it is not a TV cable problem UNLESS you do not have the original carb setup. You must have the correct TV geometry for the cable to work correctly. Otherwise it is time for internal recalibration, best bet is TransGo.

Latest News:
I installed a new torque converter, the other one made a slight vibration at idle.

I put the original wiring harness in
with the trans. No difference in shift quality.

Today I took the car to him, he says its the lockup engauging too earlyand faults the VSS
in the digtal dash, 84 C4. I told him to disconnect the lockup, and see what happened. The D3 to D4 still has a shift fluctuation.

I told him that when the car is cold it acts like it should. My question is when the trans fluid is cold and more viscous. Would more pressure in the system make for good shifting. And when the tranny warms up and the the ATF thins, cause this type of shifting problem.

I am woundering if there might be low main line pressure problem in the trans.
tell me your thoughts.

Thanks. Shaun
