6 Speed 3rd Geners
6 Speed 3rd Geners
Hey, I'll be building a 383 in March. Originally I was going to buy a Tremec TKO 5 speed, but now I hear that for cheaper I can swap my auto for a six speed that can still handle the torque. Ok guys, what would the benefits of a six speed be. You've gotta sell me on this one.

dear duke.
you are gonna kick some serious butt with that combo.
myself...i wish i had the money to do that.
i've read somewhere that the T-56 handle 400pounds/torque stock as it is.
Fernando.

third gen muscle power is the only thing that can match the power of flight...

I was going to post about my T56 swap this season and how I really like it, but then I saw that I gotta sell you on this one. I'm not in sales. Put in whatever you want.

The T56 is definatly the best thing to go for. If you are worried about the power, they are "rated" at 400, but my friend has one holding 550 no prob. You also can pick one up used from ebay for even cheaper if you need to. I can't sell you but I hope you think about it.
Well, I've decided. T56, all the way. I mean it'll handle more torque and not set me back $1975. And besides, how many 3rd gens have 6 speeds? I can't wait till I get into a highway race and they think I'm in last gear and all of sudden I push it into 6th and keep going, hahahahaha!!!!

duke_mushroom, I am also looking at T56.I have 95Z,t56,borla,hypertech, LT1's at least do not go faster in 6th(at least near stock), I have gone over 150 in 5th,but 6th will slow it down(or take miles of downgrade to speed up).(all mag test agree to).I am anxious to have 84 & 95 black ttop z's,t56's!!! Does everyone know 4gens get 17-24 mpg easy!

Yes you can always go faster in final gear than overdrive because there is more parasitic drivetrain loss in overdrive.

You can run 4.11 gears in the car with the T56 and still turn about 1700rpm at 60 in 6th gear. My car still pulls in 6th strong. If you go to the 4.56 gear, you'll only be turning like 2200 rpm in 60. Imagine the launch and pull you'll have have in all gears.
tremec 6 speed
i have put in the tremec 6 speed in my 84 camaro and i paid $1899 new from darkhorse.com delivered in 3 days. I like the trans But it is slower off the line than my old 5 speed the old 5 had 3:55 first i think and the 6 speed has 3:23 or something. I do about 75 mph at 1800 rpm yes it does fly high end. my 85 mph speedo goes into fits over 130. Do you really want 6 speeds ? Who woudn't. good luck and enjoy.
