about a year ago i installed a b&m shift kit in my 92 z28. u have not had any problems with it before. tonight i left a friends house and i noticed it was shifting funny. so i pulled the shifter into 3rd and it seemed fine. at the next stop sign i pulled the shifter all the way into 1st and shifted through all the gears. its slipping in 2nd but if you give it enough throttle it will ****** into gear. 4th pulls to some extent but not as it should and reverse is just gone. i checked the tv cable and its not broke, so i adjusted it by the book method and its still the same. is my tranny fried? is it time for a new one? or is this something that can be fixed?

Sounds like the clutchs may be gone,check the fluid to see if it is a dark brown color and smells burnt,if it does its fried.

 

i checked the fluid when i checked the tv cable. its full and doesnt smell burnt. i think clutches also, but it seems funny that i lost 3 gears all at the same time with no warning.

Sounds to me like the Reaction Shell (aka Sun Shell) is broken. Loosing 2nd, 4th, and reverse is caracteristic of a broken reaction shell, but I'm not sure since you said it "snatches into gear" if you give it enough throttle. That would indicate to me that it may be a band problem, but the band shouldn't effect reverse.

I have seen a stripped out set of reaction planetary gears also cause the loss of those three gears, but it was also VERY noisy, and it too was a "once its gone, its gone" not "catching" once in a while. Are you sure its actually shifting into 2nd and 4th?

yes im sure it is shifting. you can put the shifter into 2nd and it shifts at like 3500 rpm. which for the amount of throttle i give seems way to late. once it does shift it slips, but if you give t enough throttle it will pull but it jerks into second. if you leave the shifter in od then it will shift into overdrive but od is slipping too. when you pull it back down into drive then it downshifts so im pretty sure it is shifting into od.

 

o yeah, speaking of noises. all this happened the first time the car shifted into second last night. i was about half throttle and it usually chirps the tires. when it sifted into second it almost sounded like the tranny mount broke and hit the floorpan. but i just put an enery suspension mount on last saturday.i checked the mount its not broke. and now when you put it in reverse and open the door it sounds kinda like birds chirping from the tranny.

This is exactly why I don't recommend the B&M NON-Shift Kit. It broke your Sun Shell as you were already told.
