D@mn yo, I responded to this topic a couple hours ago, why the hell didn't it go through. Well I'll try my best to restate what I tried to post.
>>Whoa, that sounds weird, I don't really have any advice on it, except maybe this... your throttle cable might have gotten stuck. Causing the rpms to go up, then telling the transmission to upshift. So now you're in 2nd gear, but it won't slow down because of the cable being stuck. Then you threw it into neutral, which really made the rpms fly, then luckily for you, the thing that holds the throttle cable located on the engine (I forget the name) snapped back (bang!) into position.
A similar type thing happened with my friend and I. We were in his Durango, when all of a sudden the car got floored and he wasn't doing it, this was on the highway btw. He tried using the brakes, but nothing would stop it. We took the closest exit, since he couldn't stop it, he just shut it off, and rolled next to a curb. We got out to check what it was, popped the hood. Of course there was people around but no one helped, those @ssh0les. The pedal was still to the ground, when we moved the cable back in it went up, when released it went back down. We even turn it on again, and it went WWWRRREEEE! So we were like ****, we took a wrench and banged that metal piece that holds the throttle cable located on engine, and it banged back. We turned it on, and then everything was fine, hasn't happened again since.
Hope that helps.>>
I also hope I stated everything that I mentioned the first time. I guess the post never got through to the site, and it never got posted.
So check out the cable, let me know what you find out.

It must be something in the water because people seem very impatient lately to wait for FREE advice. I JUST saw your post, as I am sure it is for others here OR perhaps people saw it and didn't have a solid answer.
OK here goes, If the problem is still happening, pop the air cleaner top off and look for something holding the throttle blades open. It is even possible that the throttle shaft bores are egg shaped and the blades stuck but probably more likely a cable that froze. Disconnect them until the blades close and attend to whichever one takes care of it.

My car is a MPFI buy the way i sprayed some WD-40 on the throttle cable and moved it back and forth to get it loose. so far it hasn't got stuck yet..
