auto trans suggestions
Hey guys i have an 88 firebird with a 355 and 150 shot. im currently running a T56 however the car is only used for drag racing now at the track and isnt driven on the street anymore so its time to go back to an auto to get her more consistent. the car orignially had a 700r4 that i have laying around however a fellow long time drag racer friend of mine has a powerglide, a th350 and a th400 laying around and would be willing to let me try one of them to see how i like it and possibly eventually buy one.....the car weighs 3160 with me in it and recently made 346rwhp 342rwtor on motor and 482rwhp and 550rwtor on the 150 shot. also has a 9inch with 4.11s. All that being said which trans do you think best suits my application...Any input would be great..thanks
Re: auto trans suggestions
For drag racing only, a well preped Th350 will handle thoes power numbers without much any issue. If it's a long shaft it could even be a bolt in deal, but I haven't seen many built up truck shafts.
I think the Th400 would be overkill, unless you plan on launching on the bottle each time.

Re: auto trans suggestions
It depends on which trans you have now as a core to start with. The TH400 would be the best in terms of cost. And it will hold an easy 750FWHP with the addition of just good clutches, TransGo Performance Shift kit, 34 element sprag, etc. The TH350 will work also, if you have the right parts, but if you go with the SHD 36 element sparg assembly, that can be a little costly. If you keep on wanting to add more NOS, then the TH400 would be the better way to go. Remember the more NOS the tighter you want the torque converter. A good 10" Continental with with anti ballooning plates will handle the NOS very well. Dana
