Overdrive?

So i just recently replaced the engine block and heads on my 3.1 camaro all the guts are brand new, and after I'm done working out all the kinks i ran into the engine is now running fantastic. today was the first day i took it on the high way. now i noticed that it was shifting at much higher rpms than before I did the rebuild, its smooth shifting but its shifting between 5 and 6 thou rpms. I thought maybe its actually normal and my old engine witch had a million problems was not shifting at the right rpms for what ever reason. so anyway, I have noticed for sure my Overdrive is not working anymore. at Highway speed, the rpms are at 45 thou (hundred, excuse my stupidity) so any sugestions why my overdrive doesn't work anymore? and is the high rpm shifts have something to do with it? Its a 1990 camaro 3.1 with a 700R-4 tranny, its all the stock setup. (and the timeing may be a little off, i had to replace the old timing cover, and lost the little markers for timeing so i just turned the distributor till it sounded right, no back fires, runs smooth, but could that contribute to my high rpms?) valueable gasoline is lost at high rpms, please help.

Re: Overdrive?

Reset your tv cable. the trans thinks you at WOT all the time which is why it shifts so high and 700r4s dont use overdrive when driving at wot. theres an article in the tech section.

Re: Overdrive?

please elaborate. tv cable? there are two electical conections coming from the trany ones is the speedometer, and I don't know what the other does. but i took that one out and cleaned it up, and pluged it back in. Is that what you're talking about, or the acutally cable that comes out of the transmitions to my throttle body? and if so how would I reset it? because the problem is still there.

Re: Overdrive?

It is a mechanical cable, not electrical. And the adjustment is made on the connection at the throttle body. Failure to adjust it & continued driving, can shorten your newly built trannies lifespan.

It isn't hard thing to do & can be done in under 5 minutes.

Re: Overdrive?

okay so, i reset my tv cable and the shifting from 1st to 2nd got better, but it still wont go into 3rd untill the rpms are at 6 thousand and the overdrive still wont engage. what else could cause that? btw stephen I like your ride in the post above.
