I know you need angle of DS and angle of the rear. How do you calculate and what should it be set at? Suspension should be loaded when these measurements are taken? I have a UMI Adj TA and I need to set angle. Thanks.

 

Put the angle finder on the driveshaft. Lets say it's pointing down to the rear 2*. You then need to find the angle of the pinion. There is no real easy way other than disconnecting the u-joint and putting the angle finder on the yoke.

Take off 90* to get a horizontal angle. Lets say the yoke is pointing down 1*. 1* down on the yoke plus 2* down at the rear of the driveshaft = 3* pinion down angle. The pinion angle is only in relation to the driveshaft and not the ground. You can have the rear sitting up on jackstands and still check the pinion angle.

Now for some reason you had some weird angles. The driveshaft is up at the rear 3*. The pinion is down 5*. 5 minus 3 = 2* down.

Now to properly do it, you first find the angle that the crankshaft is at and set the pinion angle to the same angle or 1-2* down, completely ignoring the angle of the driveshaft.

For the majority of street cars, 1-3* down is all you need.

 

So pinion angle is... angle of the DS + angle of the yoke. This number should fall between 1 and 3 degrees.

Read some of the info. So pinion angle should be 0? I've read that an F-body with a manual trans should be set between -2 to -3 degrees. Can you guys confirm the formula:
Angle of DS + angle of yoke? Should I confirm that the engine is at -3 degrees then go from there? Car has new poly motormounts and poly trans mount.

 

Our coil suspension/ladder bar cars don't have the same windup as a leaf spring car. Pinion angle doesn't need to be extreme. Under hard acceleration, the pinion wants to rotate upward. The highest you want it to angle up at that point is 0*. The majority of all the third gens will do fine with a setting of 1-3* down angle.

I can't even remember what I set the pinion angle to on my 4-link. Something like 2-3*.

 

In theory, if I adjusted my TA so that the angle of the DS is the same as the angle of the pinion then adjusted it so the pinion is set 1-3 degrees less this would be ok?
