700-R4 or 4L60?

I have Pontiac Firebird GTA 5.7l (1988 year) and tranny is ready for rebuild but I don't know if there is 700R4 or 4L60 in it.

Is there any possibilty to see which tranny is in my GTA (VIN number or something else)?

I saw on internet that those two models (700-R4 and 4L60) were in GTA with 5.7l engine:

All GTAs from 1987-92 had the four-speed overdrive (700-R4/4L60) automatic transmission if the car was equipped with the 350 TPI engine at the factory. The manual was N/A with the big TPI motor due to the enormous amount of torque it produced. Also there were rumors of problems in certifying the combination for the CAFE requirements, but the truth hasn't been disclosed.

but I don't know which is in my car

I need to order parts for rebuild so I need that answer.

Best regards!

Yes, those two models are in it. Tomato/tomato. - 4L60 is just the newer nomeclature(name) for a 700R4. In 94+ came the 4L60E, which is electronically controlled.

They are one and the same.

No. You will need the kit for the 700R4. Depending on how deep you go into the rebuild, the kits may be different. Give it a few hours and I'm sure a transmission guy will post to the thread. Don't order the kit just yet.

The name 700R4 applies to '83-early '87, in late '87 they added the aux. valve body and changed the name to 4L60.

'83 & '84 have a 27 spline input, '85 and up has a 30 spline input. (diff. conv.)

Most rebuild kits have the parts for both models.

A kit for a 700R4/4L60 is one and the same. A kit for a 4L60E has different vb gaskets for the different case and vb passages of the electronic controlled trans. If the company you're ordering from lists them different, then call and find out why. My guess would be the later version including the thicker steels for the 3-4 pack which is a reccomended upgrade for any/all 700R4/4L60's. - I do build them.

Not to be a ****, but if you don't know the differences in the trans, then you're probably wasting time/money attempting to rebuild it yourself. - This is assuming you're ordering the kit to do it yourself.
