TKO 600 shifting question

Ok, first off I'm an old fart.... My days of manual transmissions go back to a hemi 4 speed with a Hurst Competition Plus shifter, and more recently a Doug Nash 5 speed with a Long V-Gate shifter. Everyone keeps telling me how great the TKO's are, and they do look good on paper and in the specs.

My questions are this;

1. Just how fast do they shift??? As compared to my old Comp Plus or the V-Gate, am I going to be happy with it, or am I going to be hung up between gears and breaking parts????

2. How well do they hold up??? My car will come in a shade under 3,000 pounds, rear gear will be in the 4.11 to 4.56 range, tires will be radials, about 11" contact patch. Horsepressure and torque in the 450+ range....Not daily driver status at all, more like Saturday Night driver, and some grudge racing at the track with DOT slicks....

I like the idea of an overdrive gear, but I sure don't want to spend every other weekend fixing the thing.... Wondering if I would be happier with one of the Richmond Super Street 5 speeds, also rated for 600 torque????

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!

Dave

Re: TKO 600 shifting question

they are really tough, they 600 is geared better than the 500.

you can shift it as fast as you want, but they apparently dont powershift, dont know, never tried. I have never hung up with mine, and have had no issues with it.

It is a clunky shifting trans, not all sloppy like a t56 can be. No question whether you are in gear or not.

Im makeing 502 horsepower and 520 ft/lbs FWHP, it a similar weight car, although i have 18" wheels and 13.5" wide tires, so traction isnt as good as i could be with a larger sidewall.

an stalled auto would be better for use at the strip though
