1984 15th anniversary with trans issues?
I have a 1984 trans am with automatic with overdrive! I am not sure what trans it is I believe it is the 700r4 but not sure! It seems to shift ok but sometimes it seems to hesitate between gears like it is slipping during normal driving but when you accelerate hard it seems ok but can't be sure. Would a trans flush and new filter fix this or is my trans on its way out?? Please Help!!

Let me get this straight and if i got it wrong correct me. When your on it hard it shifts fine but when your just cruising around easy the trans is kind of "hunting" for the right gear? I think you are on the right track with the flush as a first step. Most people never think to flush their transmissions. There is also a old tale that if you do flush a transmission that has never been flushed then you are just asking for problems since the old fluid is what is "holding it together". Well the way i look at it if you have problems after a flush then you were going to have problems sooner rather than later anyways. Ive flushed every 700 ive had and they have all been fine and shifted better after the flush and filter change.
Another thing you should look into is the TV cable which controls the shifts of the 700. You should find it up near the carb/throttle bodies (crossfire). There will be a D shapped button. Push the button and then push the plastic part of the cable all the way back in. Then manually open the throttle all the way. You will see that plastic piece click out to where it wants to go. Then take it for a drive and see what it feels like. If it still doesnt shift quite right some people need an extra click out.
Last thing i would do is put a tranny temp gauge on it and find out what temperature its running at. I found mine was consistently running very very hot when i got into stop and go and taking forever to cool down. The solution was a tranny cooler mounted in front of the radiator. It stays nice and cool even on hot summer days now. Hope all this helps and gives you a direction to look at now.

they usually work worse after! How much fluid does this trans hold it is always hard to get the amount right after the change since after starting it up and putting it through the gears the level always changes! It would be easier and less trouble if I could put the right amount or close on first fill so the trans won't slip right away do too improper levels! Thanks for the input
