How much power can a stock 700r4 handle?
Greeting to my Camaro cousins from a Corvette owner!
I don't actually have a Camaro, but you guys seem to be the experts on Chevy stuff in general, not just camaros, so here goes: I just aquired a 700r4 transmission out of a 1988 IROC, 5.7 engine. I plan on installing it in my 1980 Corvette, but that is beside the point, my question is how much power can this tranny handle with just a basic, stock rebuild, and if I need to purchase stronger parts, can somebody give me a list of them? I am planning on having an engine that produces around 320 horsepower, 380 ft. lbs. of torque, low end grunt, probably redline at 5,000 rpm. I have a 3.08 rearend ratio, with 255/60-15 tires out back, and my driving style is fairly sedate most of the time, but I like to kick it in the pants at a stoplight every once in a while, if that helps.

Re: How much power can a stock 700r4 handle?
Stock is rated at 350 hp however some people have had trouble with them at around 300 hp. Since you are not drag racing with slicks, upgraded 700r4 will be fine. The kit mentioned above is great and can handle 550+ hp. I do not know if you need all the upgrades contained within kit since you are making less power. Although it would make for a bullet proof transmission if you bought one. Would you be able to install it yourself? Maybe somebody else can chime in on what basic upgrades would be ok for you.
Who knows maybe you will get a thirdgen in the future

It may also depend on how it was previously treated. I burned one up behind a stock 305 about 10-11 years ago. Had it rebuilt with corvette servo and no trouble since. Still stock motor though
