There is a U shaped bar that runs from my rear end up near my tranny it just tucked up in there and not connected to anything I thhought it hooked to the tranny suport bar but it does not look long enogh?
any ideas what it could be ...

I got this car about a year ago been slowly putting back togeather and yes this is the first car I have tried to build myself.....God Help Me lol

the torque bar connects to the tailshaft on the transmission. there should be a rubber mount that it slips into, then the mount its self gets bolted to the trans.

 

More commonly called the torque arm. Nobody here will know what you mean by torque bar.

The only "bar" on a 3rd, by name, is the panhard bar. It runs from the passenger side of the body, down to the drivers side of the rear axle, and prevents the rear axle from moving side to side under the car.

 

i am doing the same thing with my car, and would like more clarity, my v8 didnt have one hooked up (bought it with no trans) so i dont know how it comes out, is there a bolt threw it? or is it just resting on it.

also i heard when it is removed it will shoot up like a bat outta hell, will it do much damage? my car has lowering springs in the rear

 

This is what it looks like...i had to buy one off ebay before when i converted from my 700R4 to the T5 because they are different so make sure you get the right one..i have an extra auto one if anyone needs it ill throw it out there cheap.

oh there different? im talking about the long bar from the rear end to trans, i have the one off my v8 car, and the one is still installed on my v6, well heres what im doing, i have 2 camaros, ones an 84 v6 auto with a mint body, the other is a 89 305 t5 with the gfx, so pretty much takin it all onto the 84, and i just gotta remove that old 2.8 and trans, but the tourque arm looks like it goes into this rubber piece but does a bolt run threw it? i dont have the luxury of a hoist, just jack stands and its hard too see

 

the torque arm just gets pressed in between the mount which is the pic i posted above..the mount is 2 pieces and the torque arm just fits snug in place...although i do not know if a V6 torque arm is diff than a V8..you could measure the 2 and find out

 

dumb question but gonna ask anyways, but it should pop out when i grab onto the motor and pull it up a bit?

 

no it shouldnt..it sits in about 2 inches into the rubber so unless you can pull your motor and trans 2 inches forward then yeah but that means you have other serious problems lol the best way to figure it out is to get underneath there with a light and have a look..once you see you will realize that it is simple.just a lil bit of a pita tryna get to the bolt to seperate the mount so you can take the torque arm out.

 

I need to check into this on the car I just bought. The previous owner attached the torque arm to the trans with radiator hose clamps, it doesnt seem to move but I dont trust it for one second. He said the bolts were broken off in the trans, so it may be that or the mount may just be missing.

The tirque arm mounts in a rubber bushing & I wonder how long it would take to either break the tranny or the hose clamps. Either way, not a good thing. Obviously one worse than the other.

If the bolts are broke off, time to invest in a EZ-Out. Might be tricky getting the drill in there, but shouldn't be TOO hard. Pull the tranny mount crossmember loose, lower the tranny tail down on the jack, then you can get the drill to the side.

 

And imagine my surprise when he said he's driven it for a year like that!

Id imagine Im going to have to drill it out, but im hoping the mount itself is just missing and needs replaced.

 

The only difference i know between torque arms is that some years are "U" shaped toward the drive shaft and some are "U" Shaped away from the driveshaft. If you fine that you have the wrond torque arm bushing for the torque arm you have after doing a tranny swap, the easiest and cheapest way is just buy the correct torque arm bushing. that was the only thing that i would see that would need changed.

 

So you are saying that length of the t5 and 700 torque arms is the same? Its just the end that slides into the mount thats diffrent?
Anyone have a comparison pic lying around?

 

Yes, the lengths are the same, but I believe not just the end is opposite. But rather that they are complete mirror images of each other.

 

Yes that is a better way to put it. but basically united the correct bushing for your torque arm to make it work.

 

the energy suspension bushing is 12 bucks couple of u all soon look in to it lmao and if anybody needs a torque arm i have one and the bracket and use bushing
