clanking sound..?

Ok so this just happened recently but I think I need to tell you guys the whole story.

So, first my tranny went bad. I put a 700r4 in, same as the last.

Then starter went bad, replaced it, then the housing on the remanufactured starter cracked wide open and was bent to hell.

Then put a different kind of starter on and it was doing fine till I tried to fix my idling problem and put a new spring up on the carb.

Now all of a sudden when my cars running and im driving and i come to a stop, the idle will drop to almost 500 rpm and i hear this clanking sound like the teeth on the fly wheel hitting something.

But i do know its missing out because i need new plugs, theyve gone foul from my car running too rich.

and I have 5 shims jammed in there because thats the only way it would start.

And I'm now thinking maybe my flywheel is coming loose and wobbling and bouncing off the starter housing or something else.

Someone please help....

Re: clanking sound..?

you shouldn't need 5 shims. make sure you have the correct starter and flywheel. you should know that to move the starter away from the flywheel you use a whole shim and to move the starter closer use a half shim on the outer bolt
