"Thud" from rear end?

Hey everyone. Whenever I take off and give more throttle than what it takes for a fairly slow start, I get a kind of almost "bang" from what sounds/feels like the rear end area. It will also do it going into second at wot. I went underneath and found a very small amount of play in the drive shaft. Not a whole lot, but some. Could this be my u joints? Some people say a bit of play is ok, some say that no play is ok, so I'm not sure. This is my first rwd car. I'm hoping it's not my differential. It's a 1986 Iroc-Z with 3.23 posi....or limited slip... Thanks everyone.

Well for one I could have not been an idiot and changed the fluid before I made this post, but oh well. I'll try to do that tomorrow maybe.

Didn't even get past the second sentence and I was thinking the same thing. Use a Polyurethane mount and never worry about it again.

Re: "Thud" from rear end?

Thanks guys. Now that you guys suggested the tranny mount, I've noticed that it does feel like it's coming from that area lol. Thanks! I still did the differential though, it needed to be done.

I've been planning on purchasing a core 700R4 and rebuilding it, as I've wanted to learn. That way I will still have mine just in case the rebuild doesn't work out. What would be the consequences of leaving it till then? This could be months...

Swapping the mount out will hardly take as long as jacking the car up. No reason really not to replace. From the tech board:

Re: "Thud" from rear end?

I can give you detailed instructions on how to change the tranny mount. As I removed / reinstalled the cross member about 3 or 4 times during my restoration. And you can email me if you need help. I have my email account hooked to my blackberry phone, so I can give you an almost immeditate answer.

This upgrade should only take 30 mins max

I don't know, the guy that wrote that article sounds a little iffy.

Definitely go with the poly. I replaced my rubber one twice already. I finally got smart and went to the poly, haven't had problems since.

Re: "Thud" from rear end?

One thing I'd add to that article, the Energy Suspension transmission mount comes with a preload plate. In some circumstances that plate increases the height of the transmission just far enough to create interference. Even though the instructions specifically state not to use the mount without the plate, it works just fine and can correct problems.

What are the torque specs for those bolts? Both trans connecting bolts and crossmember bolt. Thanks, I'm going to do this sometime during the week.
