700R4, time to rebuild...
Im about to drop the 700R4 out of my 87 for a complete overhaul, ive hit a few walls in my research and could use alot of advice/wisdom. The car: 1987 Camaro, Base model, Vin code H (carb'd) 305. The first question is is it a 30 or a 27 spline? The next question is how can i tell if its an Early or Late model 700R4? That being said, what are the differences?
Now based on that data i need to get a rebuild kit... now before i pick one i'd like to include that the current motor is not staying in the car long. It'll be out hopefully by march and replaced with a 383 build on a 98 L31 roller cam block (1 piece rear main seal). The 383 will be built to about 450Hp, but to be safe im going to assume 500Hp. I do plan on spraying a 2 stage nitrous kit up to about 150lb shot (this will be a rare spray, mostly its going to be a street cruiser) Based on the assumption that 1lb of nitorus = 1 hp, im going to figure this to push me to around 650Hp, once again, to be safe im going to round this to 700Hp, figuring room for growth on my motor, id like the trans to be built to handle at least 800Hp. After spending the past month or so looking into the difficulty of the rebuild, im going to tackle this myself. So heres what i would like help in picking: Is there a single rebuild kit that will include all parts needed for a tranny to hold 800hp? or would i be better off piecing together parts to create my own, custom rebuild kit? There are so many kits out there right now and unfortunatly alot of them dont list what HP they're rated up to. Outside of the transmission i know I need a Torque converter with an anti-baloon plate, but what is a healthy, yet streetable, stall for this? What size Torque converter do i need to get? I see both 10" and 12" and both are claiming theyre compatible with the engines/car, is one better than the other? I guess what i really need is a nudge in the right direction. I'd like to go budget friendly, but this isnt a place im going to skimp. The plan is to have this done ASAP so i can be driving again... and i definatly plan on trying to post lots of pictures and details. thanks in advance for the help.
