t-5 installation question

I'm about to put in new t-5 in my Camaro. I have a few questions before I get into it.

If I take out just the transmission and leave the bell housing on will I be able to line up the input shaft with the clutch and pressure plate?

Is it a better idea to remove the bell housing with the transmission?

Does anyone know any tips or tricks for removing and installing the transmission that I should know?

Is there anything I can damage in removing the transmission that I should watch out for.?

Thanks for the help everyone.

Re: t-5 installation question

take the trans off the bellhousing.

remove the shifter

use the alignment tool that comes with the clutch to get the clutch centered in the pressure plate assembly.

never pull the trans to the bellhousing with the bolts, it will go in all the way, if it hangs up, something is off. Sometimes pressing the clutch pedal in when installing the trans will help it slid in the last inch or so. If you pull it together you can ruin the clutch, and/or the pilot bushing, maybe even break a mounting ear off the trans

take you time, make sure to assemble the TO bushing to the fork correctly

Re: t-5 installation question

thanks for the info. how long does it usually take. i pulled a 700r4 out and it was a little difficult. it kept getting snagged and would not pull out easily. if it hangs by the shaft will it damage the engine at all. i plan on doing this with the car jacked up on jack stands. is there a good tool/jack to use to help slide it out. i usually do not have a helper.

Re: t-5 installation question

a couplke of floor jacks usually works, they make cradles for the floor jack to hold a trans, then just strap tjhe trans to the jack to keep it from slipping. dont let the trans hang by the inputshaft. The t5 is pretty light, you may even be able to just take it out by hand if you are strong enough, and can ge the car high enough to have room to drop it on your chest then get it off. If you are alone, probably use floor jacks.

if you have all the parts, the longest part of the job is meaasuring and cutting the holes for hte shifter and master, and hangin the new pedals. That was the hardest part when i did my swap, but i had the engine out and just stabbed the engine trans in as one piece.
