1982 Camaro
I have a few questions about the 4 speed manual transmission, when I bought the car about 1 week ago the shifter was taking out and the shifter rods " I don't know the name I just call them shifter rods." I also scratched all the rust off the shifter taking it apart and put some oil and grease in between each plate, the shifter works great, but now I run into my problem. I don't know how to adjust the shifter rods or know where they go where. I found this think of a pic http://www.streetsideauto.com/produc...ue&dpi=1013270. If you see the elephant ears mine are down instead of up, should I put them in as the pic and also how would you requirement to adjust the shifter rods? If anyone can send me a link of a diagram that would be great too.

You'll know if the "ears" need to go up or down when you try to drive it. If you have them on wrong, when you put it in 1st you'll actually be in 2nd, and when you put it in 2nd, you'll actually be in 1st gear. I did that by mistake on my old Muncie 4 speed one time years ago!
Most 4 speeds have the 2 linkage rods for the forward gears above where they mount, and reverse usually comes from underneath, but I don't know if that's the case with an 82 Camaro for sure. As far as adjusting them, what you have to do is put the shifter in neutral and you'll see a slot, or kinda u-shaped notch in the bottom of the shifter housing, and there's corresponding holes in all 3 shifter forks. So what you do is put it in neutral, then use an allen wrench that's just skinny enough to slide through the holes in the shifter forks, and then adjust all 3 rods to where the allen wrench will slide freely all the way through all 3 forks and the shifter housing. What this does is line up all 3 gates inside the shifter so it doesn't jam up when you try to shift over from 2nd gear up to 3rd gear. You should have a threaded fitting on the end of each linkage rod where it connects to the shifter fork. So while it's in neutral with the allen wrench holding all 3 shifter forks in place, you unhook each linkage rod and turn the threaded fitting until it fits in the shifter fork.
